Hives, known in the medical literature as urticaria, are a localized itchy outbreak of the skin. In this essentially allergic reaction, the skin breaks out in bumps surrounded by elongated flares. These "hives" are referred to as wheals or welts. The welts tend to be pink except that they turn white when touched. Welts may coalesce into plaques covering substantial areas of skin.

Hives  are intensely itchy. They may involve any area of the body from the scalp to the soles of the feet, and appear in crops of 24- to 72-hour duration. The most common sites for outbreaks are the hands, feet, and face. Angioedema, a swelling below the skin caused by the same allergic mechanism, usually occurs around the eyes and in the lips. While the itchy bumps usually go away without treatment, angioedema in the upper respiratory tract may be life threatening and requires immediate medical attention.

A survey of college students indicates about one in five people has hives at some point in life. They may occur at any age, but young adults in their twenties are the most frequently affected. The precise causes of the condition vary person to person.

Aspirin sensitivity is observed in up to 67 percent of persons who have recurrent outbreaks of hives. Aspirin alters the metabolism of free fatty acids so that it favors the production of leukotrienes. These are hormonal messengers that make the walls of blood vessels more permeable to histamine. Aspirin also makes the lining of the intestines more permeable to allergens, increasing the risk of reaction to common food allergens such as cheese, chocolate, eggs, milk, pineapple, shellfish, and strawberries. At least one study found taking a single adult aspirin daily for three weeks desensitizes the immune system to aspirin and also to foods, but the benefits vanish if aspirin is discontinued.

Two factors increase the risk of outbreaks of hives after eating allergenic foods. One is incomplete digestion. A study published in the 1940′s reported that of 77 patients diagnosed with chronic hives, 65 had failures to produce enough stomach acid to break down the proteins that cause allergies. Treatment with hydrochloric acid and a vitamin B complex relieved symptoms in most of the patients in the study. Failure to secrete sufficient gastric acid is especially common in persons over the age of 60. It may be a major contributing factor in repeated outbreaks of hives after consuming allergenic foods in older persons.

Another contributing factor to recurrent food allergies is the permeability of the intestinal wall. This is the reason reactions to food are more severe when they are consumed after taking aspirin. Aspirin irritates the lining, increasing its permeability and easing transport of allergens into the bloodstream. Alcohol, NSAIDs, and many food additives have a similar effect. Consuming any substance that irritates the lining of the digestive tract increases the severity of the food allergy that causes hives.

Food colorings, especially yellow dye #5 (tartrazine), can provoke hives in about 0.1 percent of the population. Tartrazine is added to almost every food and even antihistamines, antibiotics, sedatives, and steroids. This yellow dye modifies fatty acid metabolism in the same manner as aspirin and increases the susceptibility of the skin to allergic inflammation.

Food flavorings are a major factor in many cases of hives in children. A wide range of salicyclic acid esters flavors cake mixes, chewing gum, puddings, and soft drinks. These chemical relatives of aspirin also occur naturally in curry powder, dill, licorice, oregano, paprika, peppermint, prunes, raisins, and turmeric. The average child consumes as much 200 mg of salicylate per day. This dosage approaches the amount of salicylate in children’s aspirin. Other flavorings, including aspartame, cinnamon, menthol, and vanilla may produce urticaria in some individuals.

The food preservatives BHA (butylated hydroxyanisol) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) provoke reactions in about 15 percent of individuals who have chronic hives. As many as 44 percent of persons with chronic urticaria are allergic to benzoates, which occur in relatively high concentrations in fish and shrimp. Sulfites, which are sprayed on fruits, vegetables, and shrimp to keep them fresh in countries outside the United States, aggravate a wide range of allergic conditions, including asthma as well as hives. Sulfites occur naturally in beer and wine.

About 1 in 10 people is allergic to penicillin, and about 1 in 4 of those allergic to penicillin will develop urticaria, angioedema, or anaphylaxis after taking it. Penicillin is a common additive to livestock feeds. Both skin outbreaks and anaphylactic reactions have been traced to penicillin in frozen dinners, milk, and soft drinks. Among patients with chronic hives and an allergy to penicillin, about half will improve on a dairy-free diet.

How to Get Rid of Hives Naturally

For prompt relief of the itching of hives we have found the homeopathic ,  natural product of OxyHives  to provide quick relief. Try it yourself, they even have an  offer of 2 free bottles .  Like us, I’m sure you want relief from the constant scratching.

Hives are red and sometimes itchy bumps on your skin. An allergic reaction to a drug or food usually causes them. Allergic reactions cause your body to release chemicals that can make your skin swell up in hives. People who have other allergies are more likely to get hives than other people. Other causes include infections and stress.

Hives (medically known as urticaria) are red, itchy, raised areas of skin that appear in varying shapes and sizes. They range in size from a few millimeters to several inches in diameter. Hives can be round, or they can form rings or large patches. Wheals (welts), red lesions with a red "flare" at the borders, are another manifestation of hives. Hives can occur anywhere on the body, such as the trunk, arms, and legs.

Hives are the body’s response to allergens. They generally look like a rash or like welts on the skin and appear after exposure to an allergen to which the body is susceptible. Common allergens that cause hives include fish, milk products, nuts, food additives, flavorings, preservatives, penicillin, and aspirin. Stress, temperature extremes, pressure on the skin, and insect bites can also cause hives to appear.

hives and pregnancyHives result from dilation of capillaries allowing fluid to leak out into the surrounding tissue, the epidermis. They resolve when the body absorbs this fluid. The border of a hive is described as polycyclic, or made up of many circles, and changes as fluid leaks out and then is absorbed. Pressing on a hive causes the skin to blanch distinguishing it from a bruise or papule.

 Natural Treatment for Hives

Make a paste with 2 cups of oatmeal and 3 tablespoons of cornstarch. Add a little water to make it into a paste. Apply to affected area for 15-30 minutes. It dries the hives up within a couple of hours.

By dabbing milk of magnesia on the lesions, provides some relief. As milk of magnesia is an alkaline solution it helps in removing the irritating itchy sensation.

Make a paste with 2 cups of oatmeal and 3 tablespoons of cornstarch. Add a little water to make it into a paste. Apply to affected area for 15-30 minutes. It dries the hives up within a couple of hours.

Bath can also be used as a  remedy for hives . In order to get the greatest effect, three tablespoons of cornstarch and five to six tablespoons of oatmeal should be added to the water. Sodium bicarbonate can be used to substitute for the cornstarch.

To calm your nerves (which will calm your hives), you may want to try drinking herbal tea, says Thomas Squier, president of Botanico Educational Services in Aberdeen, North Carolina, and a Cherokee herbologist. He recommends peppermint or passionflower teas. Chamomile, valerian and catnip are other common sedative herbal teas.

Oatmeal can be really useful for hives. Pour one cup of boiling water over one tablespoon oatmeal. Let it steep for thirty minutes. Strain it, and then apply the liquid on your hives with a cotton ball. This also works to relive bug bites. Refrigerate the solution and use it in a few days. You can also make this in larger amounts and put it in your bathwater (about four cups of water and four tablespoons of oatmeal).

Herbal manuals often list a poultice of the crushed leaves of chickweed as a remedy for itchy skin. Some people make a paste of water and cream of tartar and apply it to the hives, replacing it when the paste dries and gets crumbly.

I wanted to talk to you about how you can rid yourself of hives. There are a lot of people that have to live with this red, burning and itching skin issue and it isn’t fun. The worst part is that people who get it, tend to have breakouts throughout their life.

It’s thought that way because it feels like you’re only stopping an outbreak, not really getting rid of it totally. If you end up getting hives on your face or exposed skin, it can be quite embarrassing. People look at it and it actually looks quite bad or contagious. Either way, no one wants to have this at anytime. That’s why I want to talk to you about how  you can rid yourself of hives .

  home remedies for hives

An interesting thing happens to create hives on your body. Your blood plasma actually leaks out of the blood and onto your skin. Due to this reason, you can’t actually treat hives itself, you have to address the reason that the plasma leaks. The number one reason this happens is due to a person being under high stress. Telling someone to reduce or even eliminate their stress is really a tough thing to say because most people are stressed out from their work. In this case, you have to learn to let it go and cope with it better.

If you want to  rid yourself of hives  that seems to breakout at the same time each year, than you take some Claritin. Hives will actually happen because of an allergy reaction, which tends to happen at the same time each year. All you have to do is take Claritin before you usually break out and you’ll be fine.

Homeopathic Remedies For Hives

Homeopathic Remedies For Skin Hives

If  you are in need of  relief from your hives  have  a look at this natural spray alternative.  We have found this to work well and recommend it to friends.

Dr. Cyril Meyre is a Naturopathic Doctor who practices live blood analysis and Iridology in a naturopathic approach. He also gives courses in Iridology and seminars on different topics related to health issue. Dr. Meyre works as a consultant for Herbasant, a natural health products company based in Montreal.

  how to treat hives
In this interview, he is explaining how homeopathic remedies can help heal skin issues.

Optiderma: How does homeopathy work in helping with chronic skin conditions?

Dr. Meyre: Homeopathy is going to help to improve a better functioning of the kidneys and resolve skin problems. For skin problems, you have to work on the kidneys, as well as the liver, and the bowels.

For example, if you have constipation, you have to improve it to have healthier skin. If you have kidney issues or if you don’t drink enough water, all the toxins will go out through the skin. Working on the liver will also help, because the liver is the organ where all the toxins are going through. You have to work on the liver for a better detox of the body.

For example, Homeotox (general body detox developed by Herbasante) is going to work on the emunctories, which are the kidneys, the liver, the bowels, the skin, and the lungs. By working on these emunctories, you will improve your skin issue. You can also work on the lymphatic system with Lympatox. The lymphatic system is where all the toxins will be stocked. You will then improve your skin and your immune system.

Optiderma: How do you explain that such a minimum amount of plant can heal skin sufferers?

Dr. Meyre: With  homeopathic remedies , you don’t need a large amount. You just need a trace of the product. Homeopathic remedies act as a messenger, which works on a specific disease. For instance, if you choose sulphur 4CH for skin problems, it will only send a message on what is lacking in the body and will just give a small go to make it work better.

Optiderma: Does phytotherapy and homeopathy work together or one should try one remedy at a time?

Dr. Meyre: It depends on the case, but you can always mix phytotherapy and homeopathic remedies. You can mix different remedies to get better results. Usually, you still get good results with homeopathy only. When you have acute eczema, hives, or psoriasis, you can also use a homeopathic cream to calm down the symptoms.

Optiderma: What would you suggest to a person who have had eczema since her childhood and for whom cortisone cream doesn’t work anymore?

Dr. Meyre: To replace the cortisone cream, you have Execalm cream. It is a paraben-free cream mixed with homeopathic products. We also include in that product Dead Sea salts. If you have had eczema for years, you also have to treat the allergy.

Optiderma: What kind of protocol could be followed for someone who suffers from a skin condition?

Dr. Meyre: You can use Dermaplex, which is a product that is going to work on acne, eczema, and psoriasis. It contains all the basic remedies to clean the blood, nourish and repair the skin. When you are using those products, you can start with a program. Start the first 4 weeks with a general detox, like Homeotox or Lympatox, then you can include some more specific remedies for the skin.

Even for severe skin conditions, you can still combine homeopathic remedies. There are no side effects and no contraindications with pharmaceutical products.

Optiderma: As a conclusion, can you tell me three reasons why people should give a chance to homeopathic remedies to treat their skin condition?

Dr. Meyre: You can give homeopathic remedies to everyone: newborns, a child or a 75 years old person. There are no side effects and you will get some results.

I don’t say you will get 100% result, but at least 20% benefit up to 80% benefit, depending the case and what is behind your skin condition. Sometimes, you can have results in the same day with Execalm, for example. For another person, it would take 2 weeks. It depends how bad the situation is on your skin, how long you had it, and what kind of remedies you are using.

The important thing with homeopathic remedies is to take homeopathy in the proper way and to repeat the dosage 3 to 4 times a day. If you don’t do this every day, the results will be lower. So you have to be very strict and very constant when taking homeopathic remedies to get good results.

Skin rashes are a common problem most of us deal with some time or the other. Here is an account of some of the common skin rashes.

The term "rash" refers to red eruptions forming on the skin. In fact, most people use this term to describe many kinds of skin conditions. Given below are some of the most common skin rashes:

  • Patches of scaly skin with infection not being the underlying cause.
  • Patches of scaly skin caused by bacterial or fungus infection.
  • Itchy, red patches or bumps all over the skin.

Even though skin rashes are usually not dangerous, it is never a good idea to self-medicate yourself. If you get a rash, you need to get it evaluated by a medical professional. Given below are some common skin rashes which can assist you in categorizing your skin rash.

red hives

Patches of scaly skin with infection not being the underlying cause

An itchy and scaly patch of skin usually is indicative of any of the conditions known as eczema.

Dyshidrotic Eczema: This is a common skin rash which is neither contagious nor infectious. It occurs in the hands and/or feet. Usually people who sweat profusely in these areas get this type of eczema. There is a slight amount of scaling and sometimes even cracking in the affected area. In severe cases, small, watery blisters erupt on the fingers, palms, toes and soles, which appear and disappear. There could be itching, pain and even secondary infections. If the skin around the nails is affected, the nails can get disfigured. When this condition occurs in the feet, it is often mistaken for a fungal infection. The condition can become worse if it is treated as a fungus.

Atopic Dermatitis: This is one of the most common types of eczema. The term "dermatitis" refers to skin inflammation, while "atopic" denotes hereditary diseases. This problem usually starts in childhood, manifesting as scaly patches on the legs, arms, torso, and the scalp, along with chapping in the cheeks. Atopic Dermatitis may also spread to the inner parts of the elbows and knees. When adults get it, it affects the area around the eyelids, hands, genitals, and sometimes even all over the body. When this condition occurs, the skin gets inflamed and very itchy which usually results in swelling, redness, and cracking. This condition appears and disappears for no apparent reason. It often is at its worst during the winter months, when the air is dry and cold.

Contact Dermatitis: This is a rash that is caused by the skin coming in contact with some substance which it is allergic to, such as costume jewelry that contains nickel and poison ivy. Only that part of the skin that comes in contact with the substance is affected in Contact Dermatitis.

There are a number of other scaly rashes, such as psoriasis, which is a hereditary condition that mainly affects the elbows and the knees, and sometimes even other parts of the body, and Pityriasis Rosea, which causes scaly patches on the back and the chest and usually subsides in a month or so. Xerosis, which causes extreme dryness, cracking, roughness and scaly skin, manifests itself during the dry, cold winter months.

Patches of scaly skin caused by bacterial or fungus infection.
When infections are manifested as rashes, they are usually caused by bacterial or fungus infections.

Bacterial Infections: Impetigo is the most common type of bacterial infection that affects the skin. It is caused by the streptococcus or the staphylococcus bacteria and usually occurs in children. Its symptoms include localized redness developing into blisters that gradually turn into crusts which erode after a while.

Fungal Infections: Although fungal infections are quite common, they do not occur as often as eczema rashes. One of the most common errors made by people is to mistake scaly rashes for a fungal infection. For instance, a person with scaly spots on the torso, legs, or arm is far more likely to have some type of eczema rather than "ringworm", which is the common term for fungus.

Itchy, red patches or bumps all over the skin.
This kind of an outbreak is usually due to an allergy or caused by a virus.

Viral Rash: While viral infections associated with the skin, such as shingles or herpes, usually occur in a localized part of the body, viral rashes can occur all over the body. People who get these rashes may also be affected by the other symptoms of a viral infection like sneezing, coughing, nausea or an upset stomach. This kind of a rash usually lasts for a few days and subsides on its own.

Allergic Drug Rash: Usually, an allergic drug rash manifests itself within a couple of weeks of using a new drug, especially if it has never been taken before. The usual treatment is to stop the drug immediately to see if the rash subsides.

Some Other Rashes

Rosacea: This is a chronic condition that affects the face and usually occurs in middle-aged people. Its symptoms are dilation in the superficial blood vessels which results in redness of the skin, sometimes accompanied by red pimples or pimples filled with pus. At times rhinophyma, or an overgrowth on the nose due to the enlargement of the sebaceous glands, can also occur. Rosacea can also affect the eyes manifesting itself as blepharitis, or an inflammation of the eyelids resulting in swelling and redness, accompanied by the formation of dried crusts, or conjunctivitis. It is not understood yet what causes Rosacea. The condition may worsen with time, and usually there is no remission.
